Description
Starfield Mancala Kalah is a digital adaptation of the traditional two-player strategy game Kalah, set within the science fiction universe of the video game Starfield. Developed as a mini-game accessible within the Settled Systems, it replaces the standard wooden board and seeds with a futuristic, holographic interface. The board consists of two rows of six small pits, known as houses, flanking two larger storage pits, called stores, at each end. Each player controls the six houses on their side of the board and the store to their right. The game pieces are represented by small, glowing orbs of energy, often colored blue for the first player and orange for the second. The objective is to capture more energy orbs than the opponent by the end of the game. The rules follow the standard Kalah variant, where the game ends when one player has no orbs remaining in their six houses. The player with the most orbs in their store at that point is declared the winner. The game is accessible from the player’s ship terminal or certain settlement kiosks, providing a brief strategic diversion from exploration and combat.

Instructions
Gameplay and controls are initiated by selecting the Starfield Mancala Kalah application from a ship’s navigation console or a planetary kiosk. The first player, typically the one who initiated the game, is assigned the blue orbs. The interface displays the board as a circular hologram. To make a move, the player uses the controller’s directional pad or mouse cursor to highlight one of their six houses containing at least one orb. A button press (A on a controller, left-click on a mouse) selects the house. The game then automatically distributes the orbs counterclockwise, one per house, skipping the opponent’s store but including the player’s own store. If the last orb lands in the player’s own store, that player earns an additional turn. If the last orb lands in an empty house on the player’s side, and the opponent’s house directly opposite contains orbs, those orbs are captured and placed into the player’s store, along with the single orb that triggered the capture. The turn then passes to the opponent. The game provides a visual and audio cue for each move, including a distinct sound for captures and bonus turns. A timer may be displayed for competitive play, though single-player modes against an AI opponent have no time limit. The game ends automatically when one player’s six houses are empty, and the remaining orbs on the opponent’s side are transferred to that opponent’s store. The final score is displayed on the holographic board.
