Description

SpaceShip Fight is a two-dimensional multiplayer space combat simulation released in 1983 for the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum platforms. Developed by a small British studio, the game presents a top-down view of a single-screen arena set in deep space. The objective is to destroy an opponent’s spacecraft while avoiding destruction of one’s own vessel. The arena is bounded by a starfield backdrop and contains no obstacles or terrain. Each match is a one-on-one duel between two players, with no single-player or artificial intelligence mode. The game uses a split-screen display for two players on the same computer, with each player’s ship occupying a distinct portion of the screen. The ships are represented as simple geometric shapes: one triangular, one rectangular. The game lacks a scoring system or timer; victory is achieved solely by eliminating the opposing ship. The visual design is monochrome, with the Commodore 64 version featuring a blue background and white ships. Sound effects are limited to a single explosion noise upon ship destruction. The game was not commercially successful and received limited distribution, but it is noted for its early implementation of local multiplayer space combat mechanics.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are based on direct keyboard input for two players. Player one controls the triangular ship using the W, A, S, and D keys for thrust, rotate left, rotate right, and fire, respectively. Player two controls the rectangular ship using the arrow keys for movement and the spacebar to fire. Each ship has a fixed maximum speed and can rotate in place without forward momentum. Thrust is applied in the direction the ship is facing, and there is no inertia damping; ships continue moving in a straight line until thrust is applied in a different direction. The arena has no wrap-around edges; ships that contact the screen boundary are destroyed instantly. Each ship has a single hit point and is destroyed upon any collision with the opponent’s ship or a projectile. Projectiles are fired as small dots that travel in a straight line at a constant speed. There is no ammunition limit; firing is continuous as long as the fire button is held. The game ends immediately when one ship is destroyed, and the screen displays a brief text message indicating the winner. No restart or pause function is available; the game must be reloaded from the original cassette or disk to play again. The controls are unresponsive to simultaneous key presses for diagonal movement, requiring precise single-direction input.
