Description

Ice Hockey is a sports simulation video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It was released in 1988 in North America and Japan. The game simulates a simplified version of ice hockey, featuring two teams of five players each, including a goaltender. Players compete in a single match or a tournament mode, with the objective of scoring more goals than the opponent within a three-period time limit. The game is known for its top-down, two-dimensional perspective, which displays the entire rink on a single screen. Player characters are depicted as small, cartoonish figures with distinct body types—thin, medium, and heavy—each affecting speed, strength, and checking ability. The game includes six national teams: the United States, Canada, the Soviet Union, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. No penalties are enforced for infractions such as offsides or icing, and fighting is not present. The puck physics are simplified, with the puck adhering to the stick of the player in possession. The game supports up to two players simultaneously, with a computer-controlled opponent available for single-player matches.

Instructions

Gameplay is controlled using the NES controller. The directional pad moves the currently selected player across the ice. The A button is used to pass the puck to a teammate or to shoot the puck toward the goal when in possession. The B button performs a body check against an opposing player, which can dislodge the puck. When the player does not have the puck, the B button switches control to the player closest to the puck. The Start button pauses the game. The Select button is used to change the team lineup before a match, allowing the player to choose between three player types: a thin, fast skater; a medium, balanced skater; or a heavy, strong checker. During play, the player controls only one skater at a time, while the goaltender is controlled automatically by the computer. The goaltender moves laterally along the goal line to block shots. Face-offs occur at center ice at the start of each period and after every goal. The game ends when the time expires, and the team with the higher score wins. In the event of a tie, the game proceeds to a sudden-death overtime period.
