Description
Color Strike is a single-player or local multiplayer puzzle-action game released in 1998 for the PlayStation and Microsoft Windows platforms. The game presents a grid-based playing field where colored blocks descend from the top of the screen. The objective is to eliminate these blocks by forming horizontal or vertical lines of three or more identical colors. The game distinguishes itself through a central mechanic involving a targeting reticle and a color-matching cursor. Players control a small, movable crosshair that can lock onto a single block. Once locked, the player can swap the position of that block with an adjacent block, provided the swap creates a matching set of three or more. The game features multiple modes, including a standard endless mode, a timed challenge mode, and a two-player versus mode where players compete to clear their own boards and send penalty blocks to the opponent. The visual design employs a flat, two-dimensional aesthetic with bright, primary colors and a minimalist interface. The soundtrack consists of electronic music tracks that increase in tempo as the player’s progress accelerates.
Instructions
Gameplay and controls are executed through a combination of directional input and a single action button. On the PlayStation, the directional pad or left analog stick moves a targeting reticle across the grid of blocks. The reticle highlights a single block. Pressing the cross button selects that block. The player then moves the reticle to an adjacent block (up, down, left, or right) and presses the cross button again to swap the two blocks. If the swap results in a line of three or more matching colors, those blocks are removed from the grid. Blocks above the removed set fall downward to fill the gap. The game does not allow diagonal swaps. A timer bar is displayed on the side of the screen; when it depletes, a new row of blocks is added to the bottom of the grid, pushing existing blocks upward. The game ends when blocks reach the top of the playing field. In the versus mode, clearing multiple blocks in a single move sends a row of gray, unbreakable blocks to the opponent’s field. The player can also use a special ability by pressing the circle button, which temporarily freezes the timer or clears a small area of blocks, depending on the mode selected. No mouse or keyboard support is available in the original PlayStation version.
