Description

Chop-sticks is a two-player strategy game of pure mathematics and deduction, typically played with only the players' hands. The game has no physical board or pieces; all state is represented by the number of extended fingers on each player's hands. The objective is to force the opponent into a position where both of their hands have zero extended fingers, a state known as being "dead." The game is deterministic and relies entirely on logical decision-making, with no element of chance. Originating as a folk game, it is known under various names including "Sticks," "Fingers," and "The Finger Game." The game is notable for its simple rules that generate complex strategic depth, often leading to cycles and draws if both players play optimally. A common variant introduces a "split" move, allowing a player to redistribute the total number of fingers on their two hands, which can break stalemates. The game is typically played in a turn-based format, with each turn consisting of a single action.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are entirely manual and based on hand gestures. At the start, each player holds out both hands with one finger extended on each hand, representing a value of 1. A turn consists of a player choosing one of their own hands (the "attacking" hand) and touching it to one of the opponent's hands (the "target" hand). The number of extended fingers on the attacking hand is added to the number of extended fingers on the target hand. The target hand then displays the sum of those two numbers. If the sum equals five or more, that hand becomes "dead" and is closed, showing zero fingers. For example, if a player has a hand with 2 fingers and touches an opponent's hand with 3 fingers, the opponent's hand becomes 5 and is then set to 0. A hand with a value of 0 cannot be used to attack. A player may only attack with a hand that has at least one finger extended. The game ends when one player has both hands at zero, making that player the loser. In the variant allowing splits, a player may, instead of attacking, choose to redistribute the total number of fingers on their two hands in any combination, provided the new values are positive integers and the total sum remains unchanged. For instance, a hand configuration of (3,1) could be split into (2,2). No other controls or interfaces exist; the game is conducted entirely through physical gesture and verbal declaration of moves.
