Description

Bee vs flying saucers is a fixed-screen arcade game released in 1982 for the Atari 2600 console. The game was developed by a small independent studio and published by a now-defunct third-party label. The player controls a single bee character positioned at the bottom of a vertically oriented playfield. The objective is to defend a series of honeycomb structures located at the top of the screen from descending flying saucers. The saucers, which resemble classic UFO designs, descend in erratic patterns and attempt to abduct the honeycombs. The bee can move laterally and fire a single projectile upward. Each successful hit destroys a saucer, awarding points. The game ends when all honeycombs are removed or the bee is struck by a saucer or its beam. The visual presentation uses simple, high-contrast sprites against a black background. The audio consists of a continuous buzzing tone for the bee’s movement and a distinct explosion sound for destroyed saucers. The game includes a single-player mode only, with no difficulty settings or level select. The title screen displays the game name in block letters with a static saucer graphic. The game is notable for its asymmetrical conflict: the bee is slow and fires a single shot, while saucers move faster and can fire beams. The honeycomb structures serve as both a resource and a shield, as they block the bee’s shots if misaligned. The game was not commercially successful and is considered a minor title in the post-crash era of early console gaming.

Instructions

The player controls the bee using the Atari 2600 joystick. Moving the joystick left or right shifts the bee horizontally along the bottom of the screen. The bee cannot move vertically. Pressing the fire button on the joystick releases a single projectile from the bee’s position. The projectile travels upward in a straight line until it hits a saucer, a honeycomb, or exits the top of the screen. Only one projectile can be active at a time; the player must wait for the shot to clear before firing again. The flying saucers enter from the top of the screen at random intervals. They move in a side-to-side pattern while descending. Some saucers emit a pulsing beam that, if it contacts the bee, destroys it. The bee is also destroyed if it collides directly with a saucer. After a bee is destroyed, the game resets the bee to its starting position at the bottom center. The player has three lives per game. The honeycombs at the top are static targets. If a saucer reaches a honeycomb, it removes that honeycomb from the playfield. The game ends when all honeycombs are gone or all lives are lost. The score is displayed at the top of the screen and increments by 100 points per saucer destroyed. There is no pause function. The game begins immediately after the title screen, with no additional button presses required.
