Description
Batrix is a single-player puzzle-action game developed by independent studio Nullpointer Interactive and released in 2023 for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The game is set in a procedurally generated subterranean network of caves and abandoned laboratories. The player controls a small, unnamed robotic unit designated as a "Batrix," which is tasked with navigating these environments to collect energy cores and reactivate dormant systems. The narrative is conveyed entirely through environmental storytelling and short, text-based terminal logs found within the game world. The visual style employs a minimalist, monochromatic palette with occasional accents of neon blue and orange, emphasizing contrast and readability. The sound design consists of ambient drone tones and mechanical clicks, with no musical score. The game’s core mechanic revolves around the manipulation of light and shadow, as the Batrix unit can project a beam of light that reveals hidden pathways, activates switches, and disables hostile security drones. The game features a total of 72 levels, each with a unique layout and set of obstacles. There is no multiplayer component or online connectivity. The game has been noted for its high difficulty curve and lack of explicit tutorials, requiring players to deduce mechanics through trial and error.
Instructions
Gameplay is controlled via keyboard and mouse. The player moves the Batrix unit using the W, A, S, and D keys, which correspond to forward, left, backward, and right movement relative to the camera. The mouse controls the direction of the Batrix’s light beam. Left-click activates the light beam, which consumes energy from a depleting meter displayed at the top of the screen. The light beam can be toggled on and off; holding the left-click sustains the beam, while releasing it turns the beam off. The energy meter recharges automatically when the beam is inactive. Right-click performs a short-range scan, revealing interactive objects such as switches, data terminals, and energy core receptacles within a three-meter radius. The spacebar initiates a dash maneuver, which moves the Batrix a fixed distance in the current movement direction. The dash has a cooldown of two seconds. The E key interacts with highlighted objects, such as opening doors or inserting collected energy cores into receptacles. The number keys 1 through 4 select different light beam filters: 1 for standard white light, 2 for ultraviolet light (reveals invisible platforms), 3 for infrared light (detects heat-based traps), and 4 for polarized light (disables optical sensors on security drones). The player can collect up to three energy cores at a time, indicated by icons in the lower-left corner of the screen. The objective of each level is to locate and activate all required energy core receptacles, which then opens an exit portal. The game does not include a pause menu; pressing the Escape key immediately quits to the main menu without saving progress.
