Description
Bagh Chal is a traditional strategic board game originating from Nepal, also known as Tigers and Goats. The game simulates a conflict between four tigers and twenty goats on a five-by-five grid board with diagonal lines connecting the intersections. The objective for the tigers is to capture five goats, while the goats aim to immobilize all four tigers so they cannot move. The game is asymmetric: the goats outnumber the tigers but are individually weaker, while the tigers are more powerful but fewer. The board contains twenty-five intersection points, and pieces are placed and moved along the lines. The game is classified as a hunt game, a subset of abstract strategy games, and has been played for centuries in South Asia. It is often compared to other hunt games such as the Chinese game of Tiger Chess or the European game of Fox and Geese. The rules are deterministic, with no random elements like dice or cards. The game ends when either the tigers have captured five goats or the goats have blocked all tigers from making a legal move.
Instructions
Gameplay proceeds in two phases: placement and movement. In the placement phase, the goats are placed first. The goat player places one goat on any empty intersection on the board per turn. After the goat player has placed four goats, the tiger player places one tiger on any empty intersection. This alternates until all twenty goats and four tigers are placed. The tiger player may place tigers only after the goat player has placed four goats, and the goat player must place all goats before the movement phase begins. Once all pieces are placed, the movement phase begins. The goat player moves one goat per turn along a line to an adjacent empty intersection. The tiger player moves one tiger per turn along a line to an adjacent empty intersection. A tiger may capture a goat by jumping over it to an empty intersection directly beyond, along a straight line, provided the landing point is empty. The captured goat is removed from the board. A tiger may capture multiple goats in a single turn only if the jumps are consecutive and each intermediate landing point is empty. The goat player cannot capture tigers. The goat player wins by blocking all tigers so that no tiger can move to any adjacent empty intersection. The tiger player wins by capturing five goats. The game is controlled by clicking or tapping on the desired piece and then on the target intersection in digital versions, or by physically moving pieces on a board. No timer is standard, but players may agree on a time limit.
