Description
Around the Core is a single-player puzzle game developed by independent studio Fringe Games, released in 2023 for personal computers and mobile platforms. The game is set within a stylized, abstract representation of a planetary core, depicted as a rotating, multi-layered sphere composed of geometric segments. The player assumes the role of a maintenance drone tasked with stabilizing the core’s energy output by rearranging its internal components. The narrative is minimal, conveyed through brief text logs from a distant command center, which describe the core’s gradual destabilization due to unknown anomalies. The visual design employs a muted color palette of blues, grays, and oranges, with a minimalist interface that prioritizes clarity over ornamentation. The game consists of 80 levels, each presenting a unique configuration of the core’s layers. Progression is linear, with difficulty increasing through the introduction of new segment types, such as locked tiles, energy conduits, and rotating rings. The game does not feature a timer or scoring system, focusing instead on logical deduction and spatial reasoning. Sound design is limited to ambient hums and clicks, reinforcing the sterile, mechanical atmosphere. Around the Core has been noted for its accessibility, requiring no reading comprehension beyond basic symbols, and for its lack of punitive mechanics, as players can undo moves freely.

Instructions
Gameplay in Around the Core is turn-based and operates on a grid of hexagonal tiles arranged in concentric rings around a central hub. The player controls a single drone, which can be moved to any adjacent tile on the same ring or to a tile directly above or below on a different ring, provided the path is unobstructed. The objective of each level is to align all energy conduits—marked by glowing lines on the tiles—into a continuous circuit from the core’s center to its outer edge. The player interacts with the game using a mouse or touch input. Clicking or tapping a tile selects it, and then clicking an adjacent empty tile moves the drone there. To rotate a ring of tiles, the player clicks and drags along the ring’s circumference; the ring rotates by one tile position per drag. The drone cannot occupy a tile that is part of a locked segment, indicated by a darker color and a padlock icon. Energy conduits are activated only when a complete path is formed; partial paths do not provide feedback. The game provides an undo button in the top-left corner, which reverses the last action, and a reset button that restores the level to its starting configuration. No time limit or move counter is present. The interface also displays a level number and a progress bar showing the percentage of the core stabilized. Controls are identical across all platforms, with keyboard shortcuts available on PC: R for reset, Z for undo, and arrow keys for drone movement.
