Description
Alchemist's Trial is a single-player puzzle and resource management video game developed by independent studio Iron Cog Interactive, released in 2023 for personal computers and tablet devices. The game is set in a fictional medieval alchemical workshop. The player assumes the role of an apprentice alchemist tasked with completing a series of increasingly complex transmutation experiments. The core objective is to synthesize specific target compounds from a limited set of base ingredients using a simulated alchemical process. The game world is confined to a single, detailed laboratory environment. Narrative progression is driven by the successful completion of each trial, which unlocks new reagents, equipment, and formula blueprints. The game features a deterministic system of chemical reactions, where each combination of ingredients and application of heat or pressure yields a predictable outcome. There are no random elements or procedural generation. The visual presentation is a top-down, two-dimensional view of the laboratory workbench. The color palette is muted, dominated by earth tones and metallic greys. The audio design consists of ambient workshop sounds and discrete sound effects for actions like grinding, pouring, and heating. The game does not include a multiplayer mode, voice acting, or a traditional save system; progress is automatically recorded after each successful trial.

Instructions
Gameplay and controls are structured around a point-and-click interface. The player interacts with the game world by selecting objects and actions from a context-sensitive menu. The primary control is the left mouse button or a touch tap. The laboratory workbench is divided into distinct zones: the ingredient shelf, the mortar and pestle, the crucible, the alembic, and the formula book. To begin a trial, the player first consults the formula book, which displays the target compound and its required properties. The player then selects base ingredients from the shelf by clicking on them. Selected ingredients are placed into the mortar for grinding. Grinding is initiated by clicking the pestle icon; a progress bar indicates the duration. The ground material is then transferred to the crucible. The player applies heat by clicking the furnace icon, which opens a slider to adjust temperature. The crucible contents are stirred by clicking a stirring rod icon. The mixture is then poured into the alembic for distillation. Distillation requires the player to click a condenser valve to control the rate of vapor flow. The final product is collected in a flask. The player can test the product's purity by clicking on a testing kit. If the product matches the target formula, the trial is complete. The game provides no explicit hints or tutorials beyond the initial instruction screen. Failure to follow the correct sequence or using incorrect proportions results in a failed experiment, which resets the current trial. The interface displays a timer for each trial, but there is no penalty for taking extra time. Keyboard shortcuts are available for common actions, such as pressing 'G' to grind or 'H' to heat.
